Exploring Issues through Inquiries and Systemic Reviews
As part of the establishment of Victoria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission (MHWC), we have developed the Exploring Issues through Inquiries and Systemic Reviews Guide (the Guide).
The Guide is now in place, and it outlines our strategy for addressing systemic issues within Victoria’s mental health and wellbeing system.
Background
The Guide provides information about how the MHWC explores systemic issues related to the performance, quality, and safety of Victoria’s mental health and wellbeing system. It aims to ensure that the system is continuously improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes and effectively meeting the needs of the Victorian community.
Key Messages
- The Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 sets out the Commission’s objectives and functions, providing us with the authority to explore issues, including those that are systemic.
- The Guide focusses on the importance of inquiries and systemic reviews, detailing our approach to monitoring and reporting functions.
- Our annual planning cycle will help determine and prioritise issues for exploration based on the diverse perspectives and the needs of those with mental illness and psychological distress, including their carers, families, and supporters.
- We will pilot this draft annual planning cycle for one year and we will actively seek feedback from stakeholders to refine and improve our approach.
- We will seek input from a wide range of stakeholders to assess the priority and feasibility of issues identified in the draft long list of topics for exploration.
The document represents a significant milestone in our establishment year. Exploring and addressing issues within the mental health and wellbeing system is a critical step toward driving improvements and ensuring that consumers, carers, families and supporters benefit from a more responsive and accountable system.
